American Airlines told employees on Thursday that it has reviewed its policies and procedures related to contagious diseases and created a task force to address concerns related to Ebola.
In a company newsletter American said it has not needed to change or update procedures in place for infectious disease control. It is also answering employee questions through a central email address.
"We’re trying to outpace the fear, and are relying on facts and direction from the CDC," said Deborah Thompson, director of emergency planning and response.

Deborah Thompson, Director Emergency Planning & Response, speaks to Ebola concerns:
We have created a task force that oversees contagious disease situations exactly like we are seeing now, so we are ready. The very first thing we did was review our procedures onboard and on the ground to see if they were compliant with CDC guidelines, and they are. We have procedures in place for infectious disease control, for cleaning lavatories, for personal protective equipment, and we haven’t needed to change those.
After an exhaustive review of our current policies and procedures, the next thing we did was expand the task force outreach to all operating groups. We started centralizing all of our co-workers’ questions and concerns, and aggregating those questions to a central location so the answers could be viewed by all. Find answers to your questions on Jetnet and Wings. We also had a conference call with union leadership, who are joined with us to ensure all information coming to us from the CDC and other agencies is shared broadly.
We want to answer your questions, and we are approaching this with a mindset to present facts, and to gather direction and disseminate those updates quickly. We have set up a special mailbox and encourage employees to use that. We’re trying to outpace the fear, and are relying on facts and direction from the CDC.
