The private prison industry has spent over $45 million to lobby Congress for a chance to expand their “business.”
Their efforts have paid off big time. Last year, these companies made over $3.3 billion by trapping people in prison. Companies like GEO arrange contracts that require 90% of prison beds must be filled with prisoners at all times. If outrageous conditions like this aren’t met, taxpayers are forced to make up the difference.
