Later today, the U.S. House of Representatives is expected to vote on H.R. 1, legislation that reforms the tax code. This is a partisan bill that cuts taxes on corporations and the wealthiest Americans while ultimately raising taxes on average Americans. It also reduces the incentive for employers to provide transit benefits to their employees, potentially impacting the number of Americans who use transit to commute. By cutting taxes in the way proposed by this bill, the government will collect $1.5 trillion less than it currently does. To compensate for this loss, Republicans supporting H.R. 1 will likely call for drastic reductions in government spending, meaning fewer funds will be available for public transit, highway and rail infrastructure, and FAA and FRA safety inspectors, etc.
Earlier this morning, TWU sent a letter to Members of the House encouraging them to oppose H.R. 1 when it comes to a vote. The letter is available on the TWU website, here.
